At least 18 people died and 19 were injured after a bus crashed into another vehicle in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh today.
Three women and one child were among the victims, according to the police.
The double-decker bus was traveling from Sitamarhi, Bihar to Delhi when it hit a milk tanker from behind on the Lucknow-Agra expressway this morning.
The collision was so severe that people were thrown out of the bus, the police reported. Pictures from the scene showed bodies, twisted metal, shattered glass, and destroyed belongings.
“At around 5:15 am today, a private bus from Motihari, Bihar collided with a milk tanker. Eighteen people have died, and 19 others are injured,” said Gaurang Rathi, District Magistrate, Unnao.
The injured were rushed to a hospital for treatment, officials said. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his sorrow over the tragedy and instructed officials to ensure proper care for the injured, according to his office.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his grief and announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of the dead and ₹50,000 for the injured.
