Heavy rainfall continues to disrupt Mumbai, Maharashtra, leading to widespread closures and transport delays. Schools and colleges are shut today, and train services are suspended in parts of Mumbai and nearby areas due to waterlogging on tracks and stations. Some areas received over 300 mm of rain within six hours on Monday, causing roads and low-lying areas to flood.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red’ alert for Mumbai on Tuesday, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall that could affect local train services with delays and cancellations.
Mumbai experienced its second-highest July rainfall in 24 hours on Monday, recording nearly 300 mm in six hours. As of Tuesday morning, the city received 170 mm more rainfall.
Despite efforts like installing high-capacity pumps, Central Railway services faced disruptions due to waterlogging, stranding local trains and inconveniencing passengers for hours. Flight services also saw cancellations and delays due to low visibility and waterlogged runways, with around 50 flights cancelled on Monday.
Schools and junior colleges across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Pune, and rural parts of Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg will remain closed due to IMD’s heavy rainfall alert for Tuesday.
