Floods in Assam have claimed 38 lives so far, with three people drowning in the last 24 hours. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), on July 2, two people died in Tinsukia district and one person died in Dhemaji district. This brings the total death toll to 38.
The flood situation in Assam has worsened, affecting over 1.1 million people across 28 districts. The worst-hit districts include Kamrup, Tamulpur, Chirang, Morigaon, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, and Dibrugarh. Specifically, 165,319 people in Lakhimpur district, 147,143 in Darrang district, and 106,480 in Golaghat district are affected.
The floodwaters have submerged 42,476 hectares of crops and impacted 2,208 villages. The Brahmaputra River and several other rivers are flowing above the danger level.
The authorities have set up 489 relief camps and distribution centers, sheltering nearly 287,000 people. Many flood-affected residents have moved to safer places, including highlands, schools, roads, and bridges.
Rescue teams from the local administration, Army, Paramilitary forces, SDRF, and Circle Office are conducting rescue operations. On Tuesday, they rescued nearly 2,900 people from flood-hit areas.
The administration has distributed over 10,000 quintals of rice, nearly 2,000 quintals of dal, 555 quintals of salt, and 23,000 liters of mustard oil to those affected. They have also provided cattle feed.
The floodwaters have damaged 74 roads, 6 bridges, 14 embankments, and breached 5 embankments. According to the ASDMA, 832,099 animals have also been affected by the floods.
