An Air India flight from New Delhi to San Francisco had to land at Krasnoyarsk International Airport in Russia because of a suspected fire in the luggage compartment, according to a report. The plane made the emergency landing six hours after taking off from Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi.
There were 243 passengers on board the Boeing 777, and everyone was safe. The Ministry of Emergency Situations said that a fire alarm went off in the luggage compartment, causing the pilots to land at the Krasnoyarsk airfield. However, the Federal Air Transport Agency found no signs of fire or smoke.
Air India released a statement saying that the flight, AI-183, was diverted to Krasnoyarsk due to a technical issue. They confirmed that the plane landed safely and that they are working with authorities to take care of the passengers and decide what to do next. Air India emphasized that the safety and wellbeing of their customers and crew is their top priority.
This incident happened amid discussions about the use of Russian airspace by some airlines. It is not the first time an Air India flight has had to land in Russia. Last June, another flight on the same route landed in Russia’s Far East due to a technical issue with one of its engines. Afterward, Russian authorities checked the plane and allowed an alternate flight to carry the passengers.
