Manohar Lal Khattar, a senior leader of the BJP and former chief minister of Haryana, assured people that recent political changes won’t have much impact. He mentioned that despite some independent legislators withdrawing their support from the government, several MLAs were in contact with the ruling party. Khattar emphasized that during the election season, such movements are common and there’s no need to be concerned.
Khattar, who is contesting in the Lok Sabha elections from Karnal, held a roadshow there to seek support. He stepped down from his position as chief minister in March, allowing Nayab Singh Saini from his party to take over.
Three independent legislators – Randhir Golan, Dharmpal Gonder, and Sombir Singh Sangwan – withdrew their support from the government on Tuesday. They announced that they would campaign for the Congress in the upcoming general elections. Currently, the Haryana assembly has 90 seats, with BJP, Congress, and Jannayak Janta Party having 40, 30, and 10 members respectively.
In October 2019, BJP and JJP formed a coalition government, but it dissolved in March this year. Haryana has 10 Lok Sabha seats, with nine held by BJP and one vacated by Saini. The state will vote in a single phase on May 25. Additionally, assembly elections are scheduled for October. In 2014, BJP secured a majority on its own, but in 2019, it formed an alliance government with JJP after emerging as the single-largest party.
