In a dramatic turn of events, Sheikh Hasina has fled Bangladesh following severe unrest, leading to her ousting and a takeover by the military. In a swift response, the newly installed Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has ordered the immediate release of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who has been imprisoned for corruption.
President Shahabuddin’s decision came shortly after a high-level meeting with military leaders and opposition figures, including General Waker-Uz-Zaman and representatives from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami. The meeting, which was attended by top military officials and opposition leaders, also resolved to release all individuals detained during recent student protests. Sheikh Hasina’s departure followed violent clashes on Sunday that resulted in nearly 100 deaths. The military has announced the formation of an interim government to manage the country’s affairs temporarily.
Khaleda Zia, 78, who has been serving a 17-year prison sentence for corruption since 2018, is currently in poor health and hospitalized. The political shift marks a significant change in Bangladesh’s leadership landscape, as the interim government prepares to navigate the nation through a period of instability and unrest.
