In a significant move towards enhancing self-reliance in India’s defence sector, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has recently awarded seven new projects under the Technology Development Fund scheme. These projects, aimed at bolstering capabilities across the armed forces and aerospace industries, underscore DRDO’s commitment to supporting indigenous innovation. The initiative particularly targets MSMEs and start-ups, aiming to strengthen the military-industrial ecosystem.
The awarded projects cover a diverse range of critical technologies:
1. Indigenous Scenario and Sensor Simulation Toolkit: Oxygen 2 Innovation Pvt Ltd, Noida, will develop an indigenous toolkit for simulator training of pilots, facilitating full mission planning and large-force engagement scenarios.
2. Underwater Launched Unmanned Aerial Vehicle: Sagar Defence Engineering Pvt Ltd, Pune, will focus on developing versatile marine battlefield accessories for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) and Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA).
3. Long-range Remotely Operated Vehicles: IROV Technologies Pvt Ltd, Kochi, will work on dual-use systems for underwater object detection, classification, localization, and neutralization.
4. Ice Detection Sensor for Aircraft: Craftlogic Labs Pvt Ltd, Bengaluru, aims to develop a sensor for detecting icing conditions during flight, crucial for activating aircraft anti-icing mechanisms.
5. Radar Signal Processor with Active Antenna Array Simulator:* Data Pattern (India) Limited, Chennai, will develop a system to test and evaluate multiple short-range aerial weapon systems, essential for larger radar deployments.
6. Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System-based Timing Acquisition & Dissemination System: Accord Software & Systems Pvt Ltd, Bengaluru, will indigenize timing acquisition and dissemination using the Indian Constellation for various applications.
7. Graphene-based Smart & E-textiles: Alohatech Private Limited, Coimbatore, will develop advanced nanocomposite materials-based E-textiles using graphene nanomaterials for multifunctional wearable applications.
These projects not only aim to meet the immediate technological requirements of the armed forces but also foster innovation in critical areas that support national security and defence preparedness.
The DRDO’s decision to award these projects reflects a strategic push towards self-sufficiency in defence technology, leveraging the expertise of MSMEs and start-ups across India. By encouraging local development and production, these initiatives not only reduce dependency on imports but also pave the way for India to emerge as a global hub for defence innovation. With these advancements, the nation moves closer to achieving the vision of Aatmanirbharta in the defence and aerospace sectors, ensuring readiness and resilience in the face of evolving challenges.
