The flood situation in Assam and Manipur remains severe as the death toll reached 48 in these northeastern states due to heavy rains.
With continuous heavy rains, the flood conditions in Manipur and Assam are still critical. Many people have died, and thousands have been moved to relief camps as floods have damaged homes and buildings. The total death toll from flood-related incidents in both states reached 48 on Wednesday, according to authorities. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for all northeastern states this week due to the ongoing heavy rains. Rescue operations are being conducted by the Army, Assam Rifles, state police, Manipur Fire Service, NDRF, SDRF personnel, and local volunteers, who are using boats to help flood-affected people and distribute water and food.
Key updates on the floods in Assam and Manipur:
– A total of 48 deaths have been reported: 46 in Assam and 2 in Manipur. Eight people drowned in Assam on Wednesday, while two drowned in Manipur.
– In Assam, the flood situation remains critical, affecting over 1.6 million people in 29 districts during the second wave of floods. More than 2000 people have been evacuated from heavily flooded areas in Manipur. In Assam, 2800 villages in 105 areas are still underwater, and 39451.51 hectares of crop area have been flooded. Over 386,000 people are taking shelter in 515 relief camps and distribution centers in 24 flood-hit districts.
– In the past 24 hours, floods have damaged hundreds of roads, dozens of bridges, and thousands of houses in both Manipur and Assam. The water levels of the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries have risen above danger levels, causing significant destruction in nearby areas.
– The Imphal River breached its embankment at Singjamei Oinam Thingel in Imphal West, and the Kongba River overflowed at Kongba Irong and parts of Keirao in Imphal East due to continued rainfall. Relief operations are being carried out by the Indian Army, state authorities, NDRF, and SDRF in both states. Neighboring northeastern states like Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh are also sending help for relief efforts.
The central government has promised full support to the flood-affected states, providing more manpower, boats, and life-saving materials to Assam and Manipur.
