Heavy rains have been pounding Uttara Kannada and coastal regions for the past week, causing extensive flooding and chaos. Officials report that 829 homes have water inside, 169 homes are damaged, and agricultural lands are submerged. The Kabini and Harangi reservoirs are seeing increased water inflows.
Areas like Chandia, Kol Chandia, and Ilasur in Karwar taluk are severely affected, with houses, roads, and farms flooded. Over 10 villages near the ice factory are submerged, affecting hundreds of acres of farmland. Residents are trapped in their homes as water surrounds them, making it unsafe to leave.
In Araga village, a dhaba was flooded due to poor construction of the national highway without proper drainage. A landslide near Taramakki government school has disrupted traffic and rescue efforts.
In Chendia village, five families were rescued using boats as flooding trapped them in their homes. Officials say 169 houses are damaged in the district, with some completely destroyed.
Heavy rains have caused rivers like Cauvery, Harangi, Lakshmana Teertha, and Kapila to swell. Harangi Reservoir’s inflow rate increased significantly, prompting authorities to release more water into the river to prevent floods.
The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for several districts, urging residents to stay indoors. Schools and colleges in many taluks are closed for safety reasons. Authorities are working to manage the crisis and provide relief to those affected by floods and landslides caused by continuous heavy rains.
