India’s Deputy National Security Advisor, Vikram Misri, has been appointed as the new Foreign Secretary, succeeding Vinay Kwatra. Misri, a seasoned Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from the 1989 batch, will assume office on July 15, according to a government order issued by the Ministry of Personnel.
Misri’s appointment comes as incumbent Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra, granted a six-month extension earlier this year, is expected to transition to the role of India’s envoy to the United States, following the retirement of Taranjit Sandhu earlier this year. Meanwhile, India is also preparing to fill the crucial position of Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York after the retirement of Ruchira Kamboj. Vikram Misri’s extensive diplomatic career includes key roles such as private secretary to Prime Ministers Inder Kumar Gujral, Manmohan Singh, and Narendra Modi. His experience spans critical postings, including ambassadorships in Spain and Myanmar, and significant contributions in India-China relations, particularly post the Ladakh standoff and Galwan Valley clash in 2020. As Deputy NSA in the National Security Council Secretariat since January 2022, Misri played a pivotal role in diplomatic engagements with China, enhancing bilateral relations amidst challenging geopolitical scenarios. His diverse international experience also includes diplomatic assignments in Belgium, Pakistan, the US, Sri Lanka, and Germany.
In light of Misri’s appointment as Foreign Secretary, India anticipates continuity and strategic leadership in its foreign affairs. His proven track record in diplomacy and extensive knowledge of global relations positions him well to navigate India’s international priorities, including strengthening ties with major powers and addressing regional challenges. As Misri assumes this pivotal role, eyes are now set on potential successors to his current position, ensuring seamless continuity in India’s national security strategy and diplomatic engagements on the global stage.
