Director Nag Ashwin’s much-anticipated film *Kalki 2898 AD*, featuring a star-studded cast including Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, and Kamal Haasan, has made a spectacular entry at the box office. According to Sacnilk, the sci-fi epic garnered an impressive Rs 180 crore worldwide on its opening day, positioning it as the third-biggest opener in Indian cinema history.
Despite some critiques about the film’s slow first half, *Kalki 2898 AD* has received largely positive reviews. Initial trade reports indicate that the film earned Rs 95 crore nett across all four languages in India, with a gross domestic collection of Rs 115 crore. When combined with international earnings, the film’s total collection on its first day approaches Rs 180 crore. The Telugu version alone saw an occupancy rate of 85.15% on Thursday, June 27.
So far, *Kalki 2898 AD* is the only big-budget film of 2024 to achieve such remarkable box office success, filling a gap left by the absence of other major releases this year. In Bollywood, for example, the Hrithik Roshan-Deepika Padukone starrer *Fighter* underperformed in comparison.
*Kalki 2898 AD* is a sci-fi dystopian narrative enriched with elements of Hindu mythology. The film, produced by Vyjayanthi Movies on a massive budget of Rs 600 crore, features not only its leading stars but also a strong supporting cast including Disha Patani, Pasupathy, Shobana, Anna Ben, Saswata Chatterjee, and more. The film’s music is composed by Santhosh Narayanan, with cinematography by Djordje Stojiljkovic and editing by Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao.
