In Varanasi, private schools are adapting their schedules to accommodate the annual influx of Shiva devotees during the holy month of Sawan. As per tradition, schools will remain closed on Mondays throughout Sawan, while classes will be conducted on Sundays instead. This adjustment aims to ease the traffic and logistical challenges posed by the large number of pilgrims visiting Kashi Vishwanath Dham every Monday.
Rahul Singh, President of the Purvanchal School Welfare Association, announced the decision on behalf of private schools in Varanasi. He emphasized that the closure of schools on Mondays during Sawan is a longstanding practice to support the smooth flow of devotees to Kashi Vishwanath Dham. Recognizing the significance of this religious period, the association has opted to hold classes on Sundays to compensate for the missed instructional time on Mondays. District Magistrate S Rajalingam confirmed that the district administration supports the decision of the Association of Private Schools. This collaborative effort aims to ensure minimal disruption to both educational activities and the religious observances of devotees. Additionally, to manage traffic effectively, specific areas in Varanasi, including the route from Maidagin to Ramapura via Godaulia, will be designated as no-vehicle zones from 10 PM every Sunday until 12 PM on Monday nights. This restriction aims to facilitate safe pedestrian movement for pilgrims heading towards Kashi Vishwanath Dham and other religious sites. Special arrangements have been made to assist elderly and sick devotees during the pilgrimage. Wheelchair and golf cart facilities will be available at key intersections such as Godaulia and Maidagin Chauraha. These measures underscore the administration’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and peaceful Sawan season for all visitors to Varanasi.
As Varanasi prepares for the annual Sawan pilgrimage, private schools’ decision to adjust their schedules reflects a proactive approach to supporting local traditions and religious practices. By closing schools on Mondays and opening on Sundays during Sawan, educational institutions contribute to the city’s efforts in managing the increased footfall of devotees. The collaborative efforts between the Purvanchal School Welfare Association and the district administration highlight a coordinated approach to maintaining order and facilitating a spiritually enriching experience for pilgrims in Kashi.
