A significant political controversy has erupted over the rape and murder case of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Allegations have been made by Left-wing groups and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing the hospital authorities of tampering with evidence. The controversy intensified following claims that renovation work near the site of the crime might be an attempt to destroy crucial evidence. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has since taken over the case, amid rising political tensions and public outcry.
The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), both affiliated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), have accused the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital of engaging in a cover-up. They argue that renovation work commenced near the seminar room where the victim’s body was discovered shortly after the incident, suggesting an attempt to erase evidence. This led to protests by these groups at the hospital’s Emergency building gate. Dr. Subarna Goswami from the Left-affiliated Joint Forum of Doctors disclosed that the postmortem report indicated the possibility of gang rape, contradicting initial assumptions of a single perpetrator. Meanwhile, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya has criticized the West Bengal government and the Kolkata Police, alleging that the demolition of key areas in the Chest Medicine Department was an effort to obstruct the investigation. Malviya further accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of shielding those involved, speculating that they might be connected to influential Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders. The Kolkata Police have arrested a civic volunteer, Sanjoy Roy, in connection with the case. In response to mounting pressure, the Calcutta High Court has ordered a CBI investigation, which commenced on Wednesday morning. The CBI has brought in a specialized medical and forensic team to examine the case. This development follows a nationwide protest by doctors and medical students, supported by the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), highlighting the gravity of the situation.
The rape and murder case of the Kolkata doctor has ignited a fierce political dispute, with accusations of evidence tampering and attempts to protect the perpetrators. The involvement of the CBI marks a significant shift in the investigation, aimed at addressing the allegations and ensuring a thorough examination of the evidence. As political figures and activist groups continue to voice their concerns, the case remains under intense scrutiny. The protests and legal actions underscore the urgent need for transparency and justice in this high-profile incident.
