Akhil Vijayan, a 35-year-old tourist from Kerala, died because he was struck by lightning while he was at Miramar beach in Goa. He was with a group of seven to eight people when heavy rain, thunder, and lightning suddenly hit around 8:50 pm. They hurried to their car to avoid the rain, but lightning struck while they were leaving.
The lightning knocked Vijayan, his wife, and a male friend unconscious. His wife and the friend woke up soon after, but Vijayan remained unconscious. The police thought he might have had a heart attack, so they took him to GMC hospital, but he was already dead when they arrived.
The postmortem revealed that Vijayan died from electrocution and injuries from the lightning strike. He was from Ernakulam in Kerala and had gone to Goa with his friends on May 13. They were staying at the Circuit House in Altinho and had visited Miramar Beach on May 14.
Vijayan’s body was given to his family, who took it back to Kerala. He worked in the taxi business and is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Miramar Beach, near Panaji, is a popular spot for tourists and locals. In another incident, 11 people were killed by lightning strikes in different parts of the Malda district in West Bengal on Thursday afternoon.
