The Indian government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared June 25th as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’, marking the anniversary of the imposition of Emergency in 1975 by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. This decision aims to commemorate the struggles of those who fought against the suppression of democratic rights during that tumultuous period. Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the observance will serve as a reminder of the consequences when constitutional values are disregarded.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ has sparked significant reactions across political circles in India. He underscored the importance of remembering the dark phase of Emergency, describing it as a period when the Constitution of India was violated and individuals suffered grave injustices. Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his support for the decision, highlighting that it will honor the sacrifices of those who endured severe hardships during the Emergency. The move is seen as a gesture to uphold the principles of democracy and to prevent such authoritarian actions from recurring in the future. Union Minister and BJP President JP Nadda lauded the decision, stating that it will annually remind the nation of the critical importance of democracy and constitutional rights. The BJP has positioned the observance as a means to educate the younger generation about the perils of authoritarianism and the resilience needed to uphold democratic values. In contrast, Congress leader and Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar criticized the government’s decision, attributing it to political motives following electoral setbacks. He defended the Congress legacy post-Emergency, asserting that subsequent leaderships, including those of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, and P.V. Narasimha Rao, restored public trust in the party. Congress UP president Ajay Rai accused the BJP of politicizing the issue, suggesting that the ruling party’s focus on Emergency reflects its concerns over current political challenges. He implied that the BJP’s emphasis on historical events like the Emergency might be an attempt to divert attention from present issues. The declaration of ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ has evoked mixed reactions among the public, with some supporting it as a necessary reminder of India’s democratic resilience, while others view it through the lens of political strategy and historical revisionism.

As India prepares to mark ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ annually on June 25th, the decision by the Modi government has sparked a debate on the significance of historical memory and its implications for contemporary politics. It remains to be seen how this observance will shape public discourse on democracy, governance, and the preservation of constitutional values in the country’s political landscape. The government’s initiative to commemorate the Emergency era serves as a pivotal moment to reflect on India’s journey as a democracy, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding constitutional principles amidst evolving challenges.
