After being sworn in as a Member of Parliament, Asaduddin Owaisi sparked controversy by expressing support for Palestine. A complaint has been filed with President Droupadi Murmu, urging for Owaisi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha. The complaint, citing Article 102(1)(d) of the Constitution, alleges that Owaisi’s slogan “Jai Palestine” indicates allegiance to a foreign state, which could disqualify him from holding office.
Owaisi, a five-time MP from Hyderabad, raised the slogans of ‘Jai Telangana’ and ‘Jai Palestine’ immediately after taking his oath. The complaint argues that this action violates constitutional provisions that prohibit allegiance to foreign states by members of Parliament.
Advocate Hari Shankar, in his letter to the President, emphasized the seriousness of Owaisi’s actions, calling them a threat to national security and urging appropriate action under the Constitution. Meanwhile, Hindu leaders at a convention in Goa also demanded Owaisi’s disqualification over his stance on Palestine.
In response, Owaisi defended his remarks, stating that there is no constitutional provision condemning his statements. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju acknowledged receiving complaints about Owaisi’s remarks and indicated a review of parliamentary rules regarding such statements.
