Rahul Gandhi Appointed Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha
Rahul Gandhi has been named the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. This decision was made during a meeting of floor leaders from Congress and its allies. KC Venugopal, Congress party general secretary, announced the appointment after the meeting. Venugopal said that Sonia Gandhi, the chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP), wrote a letter to pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab informing him of the decision. He also mentioned that other office bearers would be decided later.
The meeting took place at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence in New Delhi. Leaders from various parties in the INDIA bloc, including Supriya Sule from NCP(SP), Derek O’Brien from TMC, and Hanuman Beniwal from the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party, were present.
Anand Dubey, a leader from Shiv Sena (UBT), expressed happiness over the appointment. He noted that Congress, which won 99 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, is the largest member of the INDIA bloc and that Rahul Gandhi played a key role in this achievement.
Rahul Gandhi, who has been an MP for five terms, currently represents the Rae Bareli constituency. He took his oath as an MP on Tuesday while holding a copy of the Constitution. This is the first time in 10 years that Congress, as the largest opposition party, has secured the post of Leader of the Opposition. In the past two elections, they did not have the required 10 percent of members in the Lok Sabha to get this post.
Last week, Rahul Gandhi hinted at his appointment when he mentioned that Kharge had “threatened” him to accept the party’s resolution to be the Leader of the Opposition. This appointment comes just before the election for the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, where both the ruling NDA and the opposition INDIA bloc have fielded their own candidates.
