Indian Students in Canada University : Canada has significantly decreased the number of study permits granted to Indian students amidst a diplomatic dispute. Only 14,910 permits were issued in the quarter ended December last year, down from 108,940 in the preceding three months, marking an 86 percent decrease. The strained relations between Canada and India stem from baseless allegations by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau linking Indian agents to the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. This led to Canada recalling 41 diplomats following the Indian government’s recommendation to reduce its ambassador count in Delhi. Canada’s Immigration Minister, Mark Miller, stated in a recent interview that processing a large number of study permits is currently unfeasible, and there are no indications of a significant increase in permit issuance in the near future. Indian students constitute a significant portion of foreign students in Canada, owning 41 percent of the 225,835 study permits issued in 2022. While foreign students are a primary source of income for Canadian universities, their increasing immigration has led to issues such as unemployment and housing shortages in the country. In response, Canada is contemplating imposing restrictions on foreign students residing in the country.
