“I am glad that the President of India has nominated @SmtSudhaMurty Ji for the Rajya Sabha. Sudha Ji’s contributions to various disciplines, including social service, philanthropy, and education, have been enormous and inspiring,” PM Modi wrote.
In his statement on International Women’s Day, the Prime Minister remarked that Murty’s participation in the Upper House is “a powerful testament to Nari Shakti (women power), exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping the nation’s destiny”.
Sudha Murty, wife to Infosys founder Narayana Murthy, is a prolific Kannada and English writer who has written novels, technical publications, and travelogues. She is the mother of venture capitalist Akshata Murty, who is married to UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Murty, who is currently not in India, congratulated PM Modi for the nomination, saying, “It’s a big Women’s Day gift to me.” Working for the country comes with new responsibilities.”
Sudha Murty, born on August 19, 1950 in Shiggaon, Karnataka, began her career as a computer scientist and engineer, eventually becoming the first female engineer hired by Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (Telco).
