Kunal Kemmu’s directorial debut, ‘Madgaon Express’, has finally arrived in theatres. The film was released on March 22. Read our review to find out whether the film is worth the hype.
1. When was the last time you went to a movie and laughed till your jaws hurt? If it’s been too long to recall, reserve your tickets for the ‘Madgaon Express’.
2. The film’s press screening began at 9:30 p.m., when most guests were fatigued from a full day’s work and eager to head home to their beds. They had no idea that the movie they were about to watch would have them hooting the entire time. Kunal Kemmu makes a fantastic directing debut with this comic film. He’s also credited with the story, screenplay, and dialogue, and we must say that he aced all of them (including the brief cameo).
3. ‘Madgaon Express’ is a skillfully written, humorous picture with a very modern vibe, but it is also evocative of Govinda classics that formerly tickled viewers’ funny bones.
4. The plot is straightforward. A jobless young man named Dodo (Divyenndu) tries to fulfil a childhood ambition by accompanying his two NRI friends, Ayush and Pratik (Avinash and Pratik), on a low-budget journey to Goa. But, before they can settle in, they have a dramatic disaster on the train, which only grows crazier with time. From drugs, firearms, and a gangster to an all-female gang and police on the chase, the trio is caught up in the most bizarre situations. Despite the mayhem and drama, the picture keeps a tight hold, with laughter increasing with each passing scene.
5. In an industry where celebrity power generally determines box office success, ‘Madgaon Express’ prioritises skill above popularity. Pratik Gandhi is renowned as a serious stage actor, yet this film demonstrates his flexibility. He emerges as the surprise package due to his performance, versatility, and, most notably, his physical comedic abilities. It brings to mind David Schwimmer’s iconic Ross from ‘Friends’. The sequences in which he accidentally consumes narcotics are so fantastic that you want him to be high his entire life. Also, Harshad Mehta can dance saala (pun intended)!
6. Divyenndu began his career in comedy, but has recently received recognition for his part as the desi goon Munna Bhaiya in ‘Mirzapur’. As a result, it’s a pleasure to see him do something he appears to like the most. The actor’s comedy timing is excellent, and although playing the archetypal mischievous friend, he nevertheless manages to captivate your affection. Divyenndu owns Dodo totally and carries the film on his capable shoulders.
7. Avinash Tiwari has always been appreciated for his performances, but in ‘Madgaon Express,’ he emerges as the definitive ‘Bollywood hero’. He’s attractive, has a strong presence on screen, and is an excellent performer. He may not have as many comedic moments as the other two, but his reserved performance holds your attention. The sequence when he recounts this generation’s futile attempts to find love and how the internet facilitates rapid fulfilment will move you. It’s unfortunate that all three performers have not had the opportunity to play as many good roles as they deserve.
