The Goa Crime Branch Police made a significant breakthrough on Monday, uncovering an illicit betting operation centered around the IPL cricket tournament. Acting on intelligence, the police swiftly moved to raid a location in Porvorim, North Goa. Their operation resulted in the apprehension of 16 individuals allegedly involved in the illegal betting activities.
Among the detained individuals, 15 hail from Gujarat, with one person originating from Uttar Pradesh. Their purported involvement was in accepting bets via mobile and online platforms during the T20 IPL cricket match held on Sunday, featuring Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings.
In the aftermath of the raid, law enforcement confiscated a substantial amount of evidence. This included cash amounting to Rs 12,670 and a cache of electronic devices. The seized items comprised 46 mobile phones, one tablet, nine laptops, and an internet router, alongside various gaming accessories. The total value of the confiscated items stands at Rs 15 lakh.
This operation underscores the authorities’ commitment to curbing illegal gambling activities, particularly those exploiting high-profile sporting events like the IPL. The swift action taken by the police serves as a deterrent to those engaging in such illicit practices, sending a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated. The investigation into the matter is ongoing, with further actions likely to follow as authorities work to dismantle such networks operating within the region.
