The deadline to apply for the head coach position of the Indian men’s cricket team ended on May 27, just a day after IPL 2024 concluded. While the BCCI has confirmed that no Australian cricketer has been approached for the role, they have not disclosed the names of the applicants. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah hinted that Rahul Dravid’s replacement is likely to be an Indian. Reports suggest Gautam Gambhir is a strong contender.
However, Rajkumar Sharma, Virat Kohli’s childhood coach and a Dronacharya awardee, has a different view. He proposed MS Dhoni as a potential candidate for the role. “It will be interesting to see who applies for this position. I believe the coach should be an Indian. If Mahendra Singh Dhoni retires from IPL, he could be a great option. He has vast experience and has won major tournaments,” Sharma said on the India News program CRICIT PREDICTA.
Although IPL 2024 was thought to be Dhoni’s last season, he has not officially announced his retirement. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanath even suggested that Dhoni might return for another season. Sharma emphasized that Dhoni would command respect in the dressing room due to his successful track record as a captain, having won two World Cups and managing a team of legendary players like Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, and Rahul Dravid.
Dhoni had previously worked with the Indian team as a mentor during the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE, further showcasing his ability to lead and strategize. As the BCCI reviews the applications, the cricketing community eagerly awaits the announcement of the new head coach.
