Assam is grappling with a severe flood crisis, exacerbated by incessant rainfall in neighboring Arunachal Pradesh. Over 6.5 lakh people across 19 districts are affected, with the situation particularly dire in Dibrugarh district where floodwaters continue to inundate the region. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has been actively involved in rescue operations, recently evacuating 13 stranded fishermen from Hatia Ali in Dibrugarh.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) requested the IAF’s assistance after the fishermen became marooned in the floodwaters. This follows a similar rescue mission on Sunday, where the IAF airlifted eight State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel and a revenue official from Jonai in Dhemaji district. Dibrugarh, a major town in Upper Assam, has been severely impacted, with the Brahmaputra River flowing above the danger level and efforts to drain water proving insufficient. The flood has also severely affected districts like Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, and Cachar, with significant populations displaced and seeking refuge in relief camps. In Kaziranga National Park, 95 out of 233 forest camps are inundated, affecting wildlife and necessitating emergency measures.
With major rivers like Brahmaputra, Subansiri, and Dikhou flowing above danger levels, multiple agencies including NDRF, SDRF, army, air force, and local administration are engaged in rescue and relief operations. The death toll has tragically risen to 45 due to floods, storms, and landslides this year. As Assam continues to battle the deluge, the state remains on high alert, focusing efforts on safeguarding lives and mitigating further damage from the ongoing natural disaster.
