The International Cricket Council (ICC) unveiled a groundbreaking prize fund of $11.25 million for the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 on 3 June, setting a new benchmark for the tournament. The winners of the competition will receive a record $2.45 million, while the runners-up will take home $1.28 million. Additionally, the losing semi-finalists are set to earn $787,500 each.
The 2024 T20 World Cup, the largest in the event’s history, will feature 55 matches over 28 days, played across nine venues in the West Indies and USA. The ICC highlighted that this ninth edition would be unprecedented in terms of both scale and prize money. The winning team will lift the trophy at Kensington Oval in Barbados on 29 June.
“The ninth edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will see the winners of the 20-team tournament earn at least $2.45 million, the highest prize money in the history of the tournament,” the ICC stated in their official announcement.
Further details from the ICC outlined the prize distribution: teams that do not make it past the second round will receive $382,500 each, those finishing between ninth and twelfth place will get $247,500, and teams ranking from thirteenth to twentieth place will each earn $225,000. Additionally, every team will be awarded an extra $31,154 for each match won, excluding the semi-finals and finals.
ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice remarked on the event’s significance, stating, “This event is historic in so many ways, so it is fitting that the prize money for players reflects that. Hundreds of millions of fans worldwide will be entertained by the players in what we’re hoping to be an Out of This World event.”
The tournament commenced on 1 June with 40 matches in the first round, followed by 12 Super 8 matches. The semi-finals will be held in Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana, culminating in the final at Kensington Oval in Barbados.
