Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with his Council of Ministers, resigned on Wednesday. This was confirmed by a statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Droupadi Murmu accepted the resignation but requested Modi to continue in his role until the new government is formed.
Before resigning, Modi led a Union Cabinet meeting where they decided to dissolve the 17th Lok Sabha, whose term ends on June 16. The meeting also reviewed the results of the recent Lok Sabha elections and discussed the formation of the new government.
The election results, announced on Tuesday, showed a decrease in the number of seats held by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which won 240 seats, down from 303 five years ago. Despite this, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured 293 seats, enough for a third term in office. The NDA’s simple majority needed 272 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha.
The opposition coalition, INDIA, led by the Indian National Congress, won 233 seats. The Congress party itself nearly doubled its presence in Parliament, securing 99 seats, compared to 91 seats in the 2019 elections. In the previous election, the NDA had won 353 seats, while the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance had won 91 seats.
