The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing for July 8 to address petitions calling for a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities in the NEET medical entrance exam. The court has directed the Centre to provide a response by that date regarding claims of question paper leaks and other issues.
Controversy erupted when the National Testing Agency (NTA) awarded grace marks to some candidates due to errors such as a misprinted question, torn OMR sheets, and delays in OMR sheet distribution. In response, the Centre and the NTA informed the Supreme Court that they had revoked the grace marks awarded to 1,563 candidates. These candidates now have the option to retake the exam or forgo the compensatory marks given for lost time.
The NEET exam, conducted on May 5, spanned 4,750 centers and saw the participation of approximately 24 lakh candidates. Although the results were initially expected to be released on June 14, they were announced earlier on June 4, following the expedited completion of answer sheet evaluations.
