The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is now in charge of the case. Police have arrested 25 people for attacking the Channagiri police station. This attack happened in Channagiri town, Davangere district, on early Saturday morning. A mob vandalized the station and damaged vehicles because of an alleged custodial death. Eleven police officers were injured.
The CID took over the investigation, and police arrested the suspects under sections 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from duty) and 307 (Attempt to murder) of the IPC. The suspects are now in judicial custody. Police formed five teams to investigate using CCTV footage and video clips.
Adil, 30, was detained on May 24 for alleged gambling. His health worsened, and he died in custody. This news led his relatives and others to attack the police station, accusing the police of causing his death.
The Deputy Superintendent of Police and the Channagiri police station inspector were suspended. Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said on Sunday that there was negligence by the police. An inquiry is underway to determine if Adil died from a heart attack or low blood pressure. The inquiry will also investigate claims that police detained Adil for not paying a bribe. If any wrongdoing is found, officials will be dismissed.
