Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is on track to win his first term as a Member of Parliament for the Rae Bareli seat. According to the latest figures from the Election Commission of India (ECI), Gandhi leads by 28,326 votes over BJP’s Dinesh Pratap Singh. Gandhi has so far secured 62,202 votes, while Singh has garnered 33,876 votes. BSP candidate Thakur Prasad Yadav is currently in third place.
Rae Bareli is considered a stronghold for the Congress party and has been a family bastion for the Gandhis. UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi previously held the seat, winning the Lok Sabha polls in 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2019. In the 2024 elections, Rahul Gandhi contested the seat against BJP’s Dinesh Pratap Singh. Voting in Rae Bareli took place during the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections on 20 April.
In addition to Rae Bareli, other constituencies in Uttar Pradesh that voted in the fifth phase include Amethi, Lucknow, Mohanlalganj, Hamirpur, Jalaun, Jhansi, Banda, Fatehpur, Kaushambhi, Faizabad, Barabanki, Kaiserganj, and Gonda. Rae Bareli recorded a voter turnout of 58.12%, according to the ECI.
Rahul Gandhi is also contesting from Kerala’s Wayanad constituency, where polling took place on 20 April and saw a voter turnout of 73.57%. Gandhi previously won the Wayanad seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections by a margin of 706,367 votes and is looking to replicate his success in this election.
With Rahul Gandhi leading in Rae Bareli, it appears likely that he will secure his first term as an MP from this significant constituency, reinforcing the Congress party’s foothold in the region.
