With the recorded temperature of a whopping 47.4 degrees in Najafgarh, and several other
areas of Delhi, the weather department has issued a red alert in Delhi. Surrounding states
of Punjab, Haryana, west Rajasthan, a few areas of east Rajasthan, west Uttar Pradesh,
and isolated pockets of west Madhya Pradesh can expect to experience extreme heatwave
until 24th May. The report further added that heatwave conditions may also be prevalent in
areas of east Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, east Madhya Pradesh,
Gujarat, Kutch, and Odisha.
The scorching May heat has compelled people to stay at home, with the Delhi government
directing schools to commence their summer vacations if they haven’t already. The searing
heat did not just reach a paramount high, but also pushed the city’s power demand to its
highest for May. The weather department had already warned of a hike in temperatures
during the April-June period.
Gautam Buddha Nagar in Noida recording a maximum temperature of 45.6 degrees
Celsius on Monday, 20th May, and predicted extreme heatwave for the next four days.
Other areas of India such as Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh also
recorded temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius. People are advised to stay out of the sun, protect themselves as much as possible, and take care of themselves for the next 4 days.
