Chennai Super Kings faced yet another setback on Wednesday as their new captain Ruturaj Gaikwad lost the toss for the ninth time in ten matches this season. Gaikwad, who took over the captaincy from MS Dhoni at the beginning of IPL 2024, has consistently found himself on the wrong side of luck when it comes to the toss.
In the latest match against Punjab Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, it was Punjab Kings skipper Sam Curran who won the toss and elected to field. This decision proved to be advantageous for Punjab Kings as they secured a convincing seven-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings.
Chasing a target of 163 runs, Punjab Kings achieved the target with ease, reaching 163/3 in just 17.5 overs. Dominant performances from Jonny Bairstow, who scored 46 runs, and Rilee Rossouw, who contributed 43 runs, propelled Punjab Kings to victory. On the bowling front, Rahul Chahar and Harpreet Brar led the charge for Punjab Kings, each claiming two wickets to restrict Chennai Super Kings to 162/7 in their allotted 20 overs.
Despite Gaikwad’s efforts as captain, the persistent streak of losing tosses has posed a challenge for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2024. As the tournament progresses, the team will be looking to turn their fortunes around and bounce back from this defeat.
