External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar responded to the United States’ warning about potential sanctions for those engaging in business with Tehran. Speaking at an event in Kolkata, Jaishankar emphasized the benefits of the Chabahar Port project for the region and urged against a narrow viewpoint.
He highlighted that the US itself had acknowledged the broader significance of the Chabahar Port in the past. Jaishankar stressed the importance of communication and persuasion to convey that the project is advantageous for everyone involved.
The US had cautioned on Tuesday that anyone considering business with Iran should be aware of the risk of sanctions, reaffirming that US sanctions on Iran remain in place.
The Long-Term Bilateral Contract for the Chabahar Port Operation was signed between Indian Ports Global Limited (IPGL) and the Port & Maritime Organization (PMO) of Iran, enabling the operation of Shahid-Behesti port for 10 years.
Jaishankar noted India’s longstanding involvement with the Chabahar Port project and the recent successful negotiation of a long-term agreement. He highlighted the necessity of this agreement for improving port operations, which he believes will benefit the entire region.
The Chabahar Port is significant for India-Iran relations and serves as a crucial transit point for trade with Afghanistan and Central Asian countries. India has played a vital role in the development and operation of the port.
