Heavy rainfall caused by Cyclone Remal has led to devastating floods in Assam, claiming two lives in Hailakandi district on Thursday. The death toll from the floods has risen to eight, according to officials. The floods have affected a total of 198,856 people across nine districts, namely Hailakandi, Hojai, Golaghat, Nagaon, Karimganj, Cachar, Karbi Anglong West, Karbi Anglong, and Dima-Hasao.
Cachar district has been the hardest hit, with over 102,246 people affected. In Hailakandi, a 70-year-old woman named Ajibun Nessa lost her life while attempting to rescue her 6-year-old grandson from floodwaters. Despite saving the child, Nessa was swept away by the strong currents. Another victim, Abul Hussain, a fisherman from the Lalabazar area, drowned after falling into the water while fishing.
Pijush Hazarika, the Assam minister for water resources, visited the affected districts of Barak Valley and assured that efforts are underway to repair damaged sluice gates. He noted that Assam has experienced more than 300mm of rainfall in the past two days, compounded by heavy rain in neighboring states like Manipur and Mizoram. Hazarika emphasized that all departments are actively engaged in addressing the crisis and advised people to relocate to safer areas if necessary.
Due to the adverse conditions, several train services have been disrupted. The Guwahati-Silchar Express has been cancelled until June 1, while others like the Sealdah-Agartala Kanchanjunga Express, Agartala-Secunderabad Express, AniVihar-Agartala Rajdhani Express, Thiruvananthapuram-Silchar, and SMVT-Agartala Humsafar Express have been rescheduled.
