The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather forecast predicting very heavy rainfall for Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, and Meghalaya over the next three days. Additionally, heatwave conditions are expected to affect many parts of North India in the coming days.
According to the IMD’s latest bulletin, a cyclonic circulation is currently positioned over northeast Assam, with a north-south trough extending from north Bihar to southern parts of Gangetic West Bengal at lower tropospheric levels. Strong southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal are impacting the northeastern states.
Heatwave Warnings
Uttar Pradesh: Severe heatwave conditions are likely from June 18 to June 19.
– Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi: Heatwave conditions are expected on June 18.
– Himachal Pradesh and Bihar: Isolated heatwave conditions are likely on June 18.
– Jammu and Kashmir, North Madhya Pradesh, and North Coastal Andhra Pradesh:** Heatwave conditions are expected on June 18.
– North Rajasthan: Heatwave conditions from June 18 to June 19.
– Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, and Jharkhand:** Hot and humid weather is likely from June 18 to 19 in Odisha, June 18 in Gangetic West Bengal, and June 20 in Jharkhand.
Rainfall Predictions
The northeastern states are expected to experience widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) over the next five days. Specifically:
Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Assam, and Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh: Heavy to very heavy rainfall from June 18 to June 21.
– Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura: Heavy to very heavy rainfall from June 18 to June 19.
– Extremely Heavy Rainfall:** Assam and Meghalaya, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal from June 18 to June 19; Arunachal Pradesh on June 19.
– Exceptionally Heavy Rainfall: Meghalaya on June 18.
Additionally, isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha over the next two days, with an increase in rainfall thereafter. Odisha is likely to experience isolated heavy rainfall on June 20 and 21.
