The death toll in the hoarding collapse in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar rose to 14 early Tuesday, with 74 injured. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) conducted overnight rescue operations for those trapped. NDRF inspector Gaurav Chauhan reported eight bodies recovered, with four more still buried. Removal is hindered due to the nearby petrol pump, posing hazardous conditions.
President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar expressed condolences and wished speedy recovery for the injured. The collapse occurred after heavy rain and thunderstorms, with the illegal hoarding falling on a petrol pump.
Rescue operations began Monday evening, with 64 hospitalized. BMC stated 20 to 30 people remained trapped. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited, announcing a ₹5 lakh ex gratia for the deceased’s families and treatment for the injured. Mumbai police filed a case against owner Bhavesh Bhide.
President Murmu mourned the casualties, expressing deepest condolences and praying for speedy recovery and successful rescue operations.
