Prime Minister Narendra Modi is gearing up to officially enter the electoral fray from the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh. Today, he will file his nomination papers, vying for a third consecutive term representing the constituency.
Yesterday, PM Modi, accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, led a massive six-kilometre-long roadshow through the streets of Varanasi. Following the event, he stayed overnight at the BLW guesthouse in the city.
Tuesday morning, ahead of filing his nomination, PM Modi plans to partake in a ritualistic dip in the holy Ganges river. The Varanasi seat is scheduled for polling during the seventh and final phase of the Lok Sabha elections on June 1.
In this electoral battle, PM Modi will face off against Congress candidate Ajay Rai, who is backed by the Opposition INDIA bloc. Rai, currently the Uttar Pradesh Congress chief, previously contested against Modi in Varanasi during the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, ending up in third place both times.
During the 2019 polls, PM Modi secured a resounding victory over his nearest rival, the Samajwadi Party’s Shalini Yadav, with a margin of over 4.79 lakh votes.
