In a significant move to bolster its electricity supply, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has greenlit the procurement of 200 MW of solar power. This decision, ratified during a recent council meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar, marks a proactive step towards sustainable energy solutions amidst rising demand.
Lok Sabha MP Bansuri Swaraj, newly appointed to the NDMC, was among those present as Vice-chairperson Satish Upadhyay administered the oath. Swaraj’s induction underscores a strategic alignment with broader BJP leadership within Delhi’s municipal governance. The council’s composition, including AAP members like Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi Cantt MLA Virender Singh Kadian alongside bureaucrats, highlights a collaborative effort towards civic management. The approved proposal for solar power procurement, facilitated through the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), aims to bridge the current electricity deficit. This initiative falls under SECI’s ISTS Tranche-XI and involves a 25-year commitment to purchase solar-generated electricity at a competitive tariff of Rs 2.61/kWh + Rs 0.07/kWh SECI’s trading margin. Kuljeet Singh Chahal, an NDMC member, emphasized that the council already sources 525 MW daily from diverse energy plants, including solar and hydroelectric facilities.
Furthermore, the NDMC has actively pursued sustainable energy practices, generating 11 MW from rooftop solar installations across government buildings and procuring an additional 55 MW from public sector undertakings. These efforts are pivotal as urban areas increasingly prioritize renewable energy to meet growing power demands while reducing carbon footprints.
The NDMC’s commitment to procure 200 MW of solar power signifies a landmark decision in Delhi’s energy landscape, aligning with national objectives for sustainable development. As urban centers grapple with burgeoning electricity needs, initiatives like these pave the way for cleaner, more resilient energy solutions. With ongoing advancements in renewable technology and strategic governance, the NDMC sets a precedent for municipalities nationwide, reinforcing India’s trajectory towards a greener future.
