New Delhi: One person died and six others were injured after part of the roof at Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 (T1) collapsed on cars due to heavy rain this morning. All flights from Terminal 1, which only handles domestic flights, have been temporarily suspended, according to the civil aviation ministry.
The ministry said, “Heavy rain this morning caused the canopy at Terminal 1 of Delhi Airport to collapse. Flights to and from Terminal 1 are suspended until further notice. Alternate arrangements are being made for smooth flight operations.”
Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu visited the airport and inspected Terminal 1. He announced that operations will temporarily shift to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. He called it a “very serious incident” and announced ₹ 20 lakh compensation for the victim’s family and ₹ 3 lakh for each injured person. Terminal 1 handles domestic flights by IndiGo and SpiceJet. Delhi Airport has three terminals—T1, T2, and T3—and manages about 1,400 flights daily.
Officials said the roof sheet and support beams collapsed, damaging four cars in the pick-up and drop area of Indira Gandhi International Airport, one of the world’s busiest airports. The incident was reported to Delhi Fire Services (DFS) around 5:30 am.
During the rescue operations, a man was seen being taken out from a car hit by an iron beam. IndiGo and SpiceJet have canceled flights due to the roof collapse at Delhi Airport.
IndiGo stated that its operations were affected by the structural damage at Terminal 1. The airline said that flights already inside the terminal will proceed, but passengers with later flights will be given alternatives. They advised customers to check their flight status before heading to the airport. SpiceJet also canceled its flights until further notice.
