Justin Langer, the current head coach of Lucknow Super Giants, has expressed keen interest in coaching the Indian cricket team. The announcement comes as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) opens applications for the head coach position following Rahul Dravid’s tenure. Langer, in an interview with TOI, stated his curiosity about the role, acknowledging the extraordinary opportunity it presents given India’s talent pool.
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah clarified that Dravid would need to reapply if he wished to continue as head coach, though Dravid’s interest in an extension seems unlikely. The possibility of hiring a foreign coach, hinted at by Shah, suggests a potential shift from the trend of appointing former Indian cricketers.
Langer emerges as a strong candidate for the position, boasting a rich cricketing legacy with 105 Tests and successful coaching stints with the Australian team. His leadership played a pivotal role in Australia’s cricket revival post the Sandpapergate scandal in 2018, culminating in winning the T20 World Cup in 2021. If selected, Langer could bring valuable experience and expertise to the Indian team.
