As the nomination deadline approaches, interest in the Congress’ candidates for the Amethi and Raebareli Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh grows. Today, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge will put an end to the speculation by naming the party’s candidates for these critical seats.
The buzz has been tangible, with much speculation centered on former party president Rahul Gandhi and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s prospective candidacy. There is a strong expectation that Rahul Gandhi will return to the contest in Amethi, where he was unexpectedly defeated by BJP’s Smriti Irani in 2019. He will also contest from Kerala’s Wayanad.
Meanwhile, all eyes are focused on Raebareli, Sonia Gandhi’s stronghold since 2004. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s prospective foray into electoral politics has sparked widespread interest. However, talks inside the party indicate apprehension over fielding all three Gandhi family members in parliament, in light of the BJP’s frequent allegations of “dynastic politics” against the party.
