Rahul Gandhi often accuses the BJP government of favouring billionaires. In their appeal to voters on Friday morning, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge concealed veiled attacks against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). As voting for the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections began, Gandhi, contesting from Kerala’s Wayanad, urged people to vote in large numbers, stating that the exercise would determine if the next government would represent “a few billionaires”. Meanwhile, Kharge called on the masses to safeguard democracy from the “clutches of dictatorship”.
Gandhi emphasised the significance of the ongoing election, urging citizens to fulfil their duty as “soldiers of the Constitution” and vote to protect democracy. Without directly naming the BJP, Kharge cautioned voters against falling for any “diversionary tactics”.
Voting commenced at 7 am in 88 constituencies across 12 states and one union territory. However, voting in Madhya Pradesh’s Betul was postponed due to the death of the Bahujan Samaj Party’s candidate.
Among the states where voting took place, all 20 constituencies in Kerala and 14 seats in Karnataka were included. The other states with ongoing voting are Assam, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Tripura, and Manipur.
Notable candidates in this phase include Shashi Tharoor, Rajeev Chandrashekhar, DK Suresh, Hema Malini, and HD Kumaraswamy, among others.
