The US plans to send an Indian astronaut to the International Space Station by the end of this year, according to US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti. He also mentioned that the NISAR project, a joint Earth-observing mission by NASA and ISRO, is likely to be launched by year-end. Garcetti reiterated the promise made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US in 2023 and confirmed that the mission is on track.
Garcetti made these remarks during an event celebrating the 248th Independence Day of the United States. He emphasized the importance of India and the US collaborating on research and emerging technologies to leverage each other’s strengths.
He praised India’s Chandrayaan 3 mission for its cost-efficiency compared to similar US missions and highlighted how combining the strengths of both countries could enhance their capabilities.
Regarding civilian nuclear energy, Garcetti mentioned that after the Indian elections, the government could resolve liability issues, allowing the two nations to work closely together. He noted that sites in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh have been designated for US companies to build nuclear reactors.
